    Default My Alice's Adventures in Wonderland site

    I've put the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland story on a recently acquired www.wonderland.mobi, with contents and images coming from Project Gutenberg.

    I reworked the text to meet my mobile requirement.

    I also put the story's audio files on the website, but there are some issues.

    1. iPhone/iPad
    I used the following code to enable autoplay on iPhone/iPad, but have not tested it. Can someone visit my site and see if the audio files play on their iPhone/iPad?

    <audio src='aud/alice-adventures-in-wonderland-ch-1.mp3' controls='controls' autoplay='autoplay'>
    Your browser does not support the audio element.
    </audio>

    '--- Apple disallow autoplay. Work around it.
    <script type='text/javascript'>
    window.onload = function() {
    var audioPlayer = document.getElementById('audio');
    audioPlayer.load();
    audioPlayer.play();
    };
    </script>

    2. Android phones
    I read Android phones before 2.3 do not support the audio tag. Mine is running 2.1 and does not even show the audio controls. Any workaround?

    Also, I found an Alice video on Mobile Youtube and I'd like to embed it on my website. Is there any HTML code I can use?

    The URL is http://m.youtube.com/watch?gl=NZ&cli...&v=D_GGZxaymD0

    Suggestions welcome.

    Thanks for the kind words, noonoo1. I went to an electronics shop this afternoon and used their demo iPad to check my site. Unfortunately, the audio file did not play automatically when its page opened. I could see the audio controls, but clicking it did not start playback.

    Any ideas?

    One of my favorite books. Just listened to Chapter 1 on my iPhone (did not autoplay but it's no problem to hit play). Very neat! Good work.

    It plays on both my iPhone and iPad but didn't auto load.

    The audio doesn't play at all on FireFox but every day I hate that browser more and more.

    It does autoplay on Chrome and Safari though.

    Hey,

    That question triggered an interest for me as I'm plotting to do a load of stuff with iPads and audio in the future. Songs, playlists and so on....

    After posting initially I had to come back to this to investigate.

    Having looked into it a little it appears that the autoplay function has been disabled by Apple for what is actually a pretty logical and acceptable reason.

    Users could be on mobile networks and paying loads for their data!

    Would be nice if the devices were smart enough to not autoplay on mobile networks yet autoplay on broadband wireless ones.....

    A perfect domain and content relationship there, maybe more folks should hook up with Project Gutenberg as China has pointed out a source of great free content!

    Hint: sherlock.mobi is available.

    Whoever has dickens.mobi needs a kick up the ass to get rid of that damned terrible GoDaddy holding page, there's no excuse to not have something online in that niche now!

    Andy, thanks for the suggestion. I'll research on the sherlock idea today.

    Would greatly appreciate it if anyone can visit the site and leave a comment (even a brief one will do) to kick start the feedback community.

    The site has been done really well. The free template has been cool. If you try changing colors, it would look more unconventional. Great site for people who misplace the story books but in are need for a resource to read it out for their little ones. Idea well applied. Great work :-)

    I created my standard CSS file based on Jonathan Stark's iPhone book and the UiUIKit (Universal iPhone UI Kit), as detailed in the thread Things I picked up during mobile website development.

    The rest is just writing a database-driven program to automatically generate and upload files to the site.

    Try this html code:

    <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="200" height="180" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/D_GGZxaymD0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    Just added a video section to the wonderland.mobi site, in addition to the existing audio and text sections.

    The video section contains two videos I selected from Youtube. One is a cartoon shown on TV in 1980s and the other a movie made in 1949.

    Just found an idea to make dish watching even more interesting. After lunch and before washing the dishes, I placed my Android phone on a shelf above the sink in the kitchen. Then I navigated to wonderland.mobi, selected a movie, and then started washing the dishes while enjoying the movie. That's fun!

    I think there may be many other uses of such idea. Say, you are driving and your kids are bored. Just hand them your phone with a movie running. That should keep them quiet for a while.
