Yep .. just verified it ... .mobi indeed is taking off . Overtaking .biz is quite an achievement as mobi was being criticized by many for its word length. Affilias solid support causing this?? The mtld has thankfully not introduced any product after gomobi, even my site defeats it in terms of "speculative approximate" traffic

Are people really believing all this? The "data" being used has no real significance and blind freddy knows this isn't an extension that is doing well.

What we're discussing here is people searching for the string ".mobi" but what exactly they are searching for I don't know - could be searching for Amazon files in the .mobi extension. But definitely the trend in search is upward.

Like .mobi, .biz registrations have been fairly static over the last year, hovering around 2m whereas .mobi hovers around 1m. There are many developed .biz sites, so it would be interesting to see how the percentage of mobi domains that are developed compares with .biz and other extensions.

This appears to be saying that the momentum of mobile web growth has overtaken
the retreat of the domainer community.

If this is the case we should soon see an increase in registrations. And best of all,
the movement should accelerate over the next few years as the cost of phones and bandwidth falls.

It is just one data point, a long way from a sure thing, but I suggest we
not cancel reservations for the Mobillionaire beach party just yet.

Lol, if only. My guess is being such heavy internet technology hubs (at least in norcal) that people are evaluating their mobile web options and .mobi is among them. To what extent it leads to more significant usage is the ultimate measure but it's good people are at least interested enough to look.

Interestingly a company keeps asking me to submit 858 to their auction company. I haven't yet.

Interesting point. I wonder why you google just the name of an extension? To find out more about .org or .net?

Or are these stats about searches that just contain ".mobi" with or without other words, and if so is it as a standalone phrase or part of a domain name or filename?

for example: ".mobi" "mobility.mobi" "travel site .mobi" "mobility .mobi" ".mobi site builder"

and is the "." actually ignored?

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In fact if you google ".mobi" the first result is Wackipedia, with a very out of date and inaccurate article
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.mobi

If you have an interest in uptake or sales of mobi names this should really worry you.

Verifiably not true since early 2010, if it ever was:
dotMobi is backed by mobile network operators, mobile phone and infrastructure vendors , and Internet search and content providers.
And this is totally false and always was - who put it there and why?
On the other hand, dotMobi promotes creating two separate device-dependent World Wide Webs, one desktop-based and the other mobile-based, and thus risks producing redundant content.[
    And this is not true:
All mobi sites must be optimized for viewing on a mobile phone, providing the major advantage of the domain, from the users' perspective, of compatible content
    And this is false:
dotMobi does not itself mandate any particular technology, but does require that .mobi sites produce user experiences consistent with their guidelines and specifically optimized for mobile phones.

I can't see the positive trend yet. This is actually good. It gives me time to learn both the programming side and business side of .mobi development.

We just came back from the movie "The Social Network." Interesting story on how a simple idea could explode into a big "movement." However, the Harvard campus life as depicted in the movie is hard to believe -- binge drinking, sex, wild parties, no value for friendship, etc. Has campus life changed so drastically these days?

Hi I am not sure what you mean - positive trend for mobile web sites, or positive trend for endusers using .mobi domains?

Mobile web is already huge and growing fast, .mobi domains are used on a small number of sites and are not showing growth - they have been bypassed by mobile web development.

Assuming mobile = .mobi is a well worn path to losing money.

It's possible (more a marketing play than technical superiority over other gTLD) but not proven yet at this stage.

About a 30% increase in December.

    What is driving this?
