    5. .mobi is actively promoted and industry supported
The goal of dotMobi – the company behind the .mobi domain – is the widespread proliferation and usage of the mobile Web. For consumers, mobile content needs to be easily found and navigated. It’s this need for standards that prompted ICANN to make .mobi the only authorized top-level domain for finding mobile content. And by having the support of industry heavyweights such as Microsoft, Vodafone, Nokia and Google, dotMobi is able to promote a single, globally recognized, domain naming convention for the mobile Web: .mobi.

Mtld still seems to think that the big players support .mobi (as if they ever have.)
They are punting this again on their mobi resource site.

Don't knock it Fred... at least they still feel that this is true; it might only be vaguely true but something is better than nothing!

While it greatly frustrates me also to remember the broken promises, the staff at dotMobi is at least trying to promote the extension. No other existing extension, to my knowledge, is. The big problem is the lack of promised support by the big-money corporate backers, causing dotMobi to be badly understaffed for the task.
