View Full Version : Top Ten User Badges Poll

Hello Everyone,
Since there has been much debate about the new user badges, here is a poll to see what the members think. There have been no complaints about the MotM, DEV, MAG, or MOD badges, but the TOP TEN badge is up for discussion.
Andres gave the go-ahead for this poll, so please let us know what you think. This poll is for the TOP TEN badge only.

I don't mind the badges, but maybe we could make them look a little better? Just a suggestion :)

think it would be nice for each person to have a resume badge....it lists exactly what that the person does for a profession and experiences with .mobi and what .mobis they have worked on. each person could edit their own resume and people could comment on them
Personally I don't think that the "Top Ten" badge is particularly necessary. It seems repetitive, does it not? Why have a big line of rep blocks and a "Top Ten" badge? Both essentially say the same thing...
I also agree that rep doesn't necessarily qualify someone as a "top member", and that there are many members here without a lot of rep that nonetheless contribute a great deal to Mobility, and more importantly, to the .mobi extension. Some people don't post a lot, but work behind the scenes so to speak.... possibly doing things such as building up the 'ecosystem' (which is a top priority, no?). Most of the members here contribute in a positive manner-- in their own way (which may or may not involve spending hours a day posting on Mobility). I believe that it is important for the forum as a whole to realize that genuine contribution is expressed in more important ways than that of rep points...which is really, in my opinion, a triviality that holds little meaning.
I think we should let members' words and actions speak for themselves. I don't know about the rest of you, but that says a lot more to me than a line of pretty green blocks or a little orange badge ever could. Having a 'Top Ten' category just doesn't encourage this idea....

I think there is a place where you can do that through your signature line or profile. Nice idea.

Kill the 'top ten' thing.
Maybe a 'long time' member badge/marking for those that were here from the beginning, say 1st two months, and are still here strongly involved. Kinda weird for those being here from the beginning, and seeing 3 month members being noted as 'senior member' just because they post as fast as Gerry!
I don't mind the badges, but maybe we could make them look a little better? Just a suggestion :) ditto on this.
and really, '..we don't need no stinking badges..'
So maybe a different term

Thanks, now everyone else needs to follow suit so that I can get one of them spiffy badges!
Joking aside, the system is flawed anyways.... the 'Top Ten' members will more likely than not be the same month after month..... and I see no point in that.

Well said. Another note: a newbie would probably be wondering "Top Ten What?":hmmmm2:
Many contribute largely to the mobile web and mobility yet post very little.
I'll take quality vs quantity any day. Some do both very well. There's really no good way to track it though, IMHO

I think anything that brings the mobility community together is good, and anything that takes us off track from developing and adding value to our .mobi investments should go. If this becomes a rep contest than I think the TOP TEN badges should go, even though I like mine lol.
Also, I hope that you folks consider me in the "quality and quantity" category as far as rep goes - I do try to add value here :).
Some thoughts:
I think the Moderators shouldn't be in top ten, if there is a top ten...their authority as a MOD and the Rep blocks should be enough identification.
I think Chat does deserve some recognition because plenty goes on there. Perhaps not a rating, but rather a participation symbol... certain people really do make that a great place to network.
If "top ten" makes even a few of the members (numbers 11-20 come to mind) post less and instead, just read, then the badge value to new members diminishes significantly.
Egnited and Hawkeye's comments say alot to me. I will vote no - in hopes that it is revised somehow.
"Please note - that this is my first reaction on the other thread:
Further brainstorming, at some future point it would be great to see some video links somewhere - whether it has to do with badges...or perhaps something to do with your contributions, participation, expertise.
I like the badge idea for the purpose of enabling new users to navigate the site with more confidence.
It wouldn't be as interesting to come here without all of the hardworking badge people (also known as rep earners) doing their thing!"

I love .Mobi
I love Mobility
I do not like popularity contests
I do not like the badges
Here's my take: I am a passionate newbie and I consider myself pretty active on Mobility. I talk to everybody, I sometimes even chat and I am on here at least an hour a day. Is there a badge for that? Mobility Member of the Week? I came on here to find developers and learn as much as I can about .mobi. Badges are intimidating and if your profile and sig explain your purpose here then why do we need them?
I am sure that badges will stay but the Top Ten badge just reinforces the popularity drama I believe.

Great insight, Miri!
"The Sneetches" by Dr. Seuss comes to mind...
"Now, the Star-Belly Sneetches had bellies with stars.
The Plain-Belly Sneetches had none upon thars.
Those stars weren’t so big. They were really so small.
You might think such a thing wouldn’t matter at all......"

"Ding, Dong, that badge is gone, that badge is gone.
Ding dong, that wicked badge is gone!"
Badges?
We don't need no steekin badges.
-Blazing Saddles-
"Bahjez ... Bahjez ? .. We don't need no stinken' Bahjez ..." was originally from a Bogey movie ... was it used in "Blazing" too? I just remember someone punching out a horse.
Per Wikipedia:
The original quotation comes from the 1948 film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre with Humphrey Bogart. In one of the scenes in the movie a Mexican bandit leader (Gold Hat played by Alfonso Bedoya) is trying to convince Fred C Dobbs (played by Bogart) and company that they are the Federales.
Dobbs: 'If you're the police where are your badges?'
Gold Hat: 'Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!'
This in turn was adapted from B Traven's 1927 novel upon which the movie was based:
"All right," Curtain shouted back. "If you are the police, where are your badges? Let's see them."
"Badges, to god-damned hell with badges! We have no badges. In fact, we don't need badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges, you god-damned cabrón and ching' tu madre! Come out from that ****-hole of yours. I have to speak to you."And as far as the badges ... I like the Mod, MotM, Dev badges.
As far as the "Top" one ... Yeah, good move Andres ... I bet that some of those that had TOP TEeN badges were over twenty anyway ... :rolleyes2:

All I can say is that I'm glad that the badges are gone now! Although, I thank Andres for his intentions to do best for the community ( his way of showing his good intentions for it) and for Scandiman in making them in his busy forum duties and all!
Sometimes, the gifts can be undeserving and I 'd be the first to admit it was a bad fit with me. However, we are all in it together here, aren't we? I don't remember it ever being a popularity contest/ drama. I do believe that to some degree, we forget that there are people behind the user names in this forum. And personally, I don't think anyone ever repped me to be " soft" with the ladies.( well maybe except pred!)
I will not under any circumstances accept that; because of the gender, or because someone " seems" popular or act cute = accuse that person of garnering reps unfairly or be an excuse for someone to say something negative about another (in projection of the misplaced disappointment, discontent or whatever.) Issue should be raised to correct the situation but, not sell another's work at half off to make one's point
We all contribute in one form another, without the kudos and people starting or participating in threads, or sending reps w/ warm thoughts, this community will be dry as peanut brittle.
The funny thing about this is that at least 3 of the people with TOP TEN badges are saying to ditch them. Andres, would you take them off please? It was a great gesture but I think it is doing more harm than good.
i've read this thread with amusement
i agree i think good idea of andres to introduce some new stuff.
top 10 badges were just some fun but could be a bumsteer as you could have someone like Rob for example who is a great help and a real nice guy but doesn't post much, and someone new may not realise.
however one thing which is more important than a silly badge thing is a silly poll, sorry to say :coo2l:
think about it. run a poll, with likely only 10 voting for and what will be the outcome?
also the actual results are 9 for, only 11 against and a couple abstaining, yet motion gets carried on one persons say so?
this worries me more, please dont run the elections in zimbabwe lol :eek2:
something to ponder as last time i checked there were :eek2: Members: 651, Active Members: 205:coo2l:
jokes aside, i think the dev. label is helpful but most on here can develop to differing degrees. i think those with dev. badge should need some sort of recognised qualification? do the ones who have badge passed the mtld course? if so useful. also if the badge took through to a page of portfolio sites to give us an idea what that devvelopoer can do as useful for noobs to to see what a developer can and cant do and some price guiding possibly?
just ideas

For me to have kept the Top Ten badges, we would have needed an overwhelming 80+% support for it, something I knew from the original reactions was never going to happen. I don't want anything on Mobility that's divisive and this badge was clearly divisive right off the bat. We could run a similar poll for the DEV tag and I can assure you there will be at least 80% in favor of it. So 9 for with 11 against is a very telling sign that this badge was divisive and had to go.

In the future, we plan on introducing a ".mobi Certified" badge for members who can prove they have been certified.

Actually Pred, I think Andres is completely right - this wasn't a majority rule poll, it was designed to take the temperature of the membership to see if a significant number of people who actively post were in support of it or against it. With comments like "What about 11-20?" and comparison to the Star-Bellied Sneetches I think we got our answer. It's a poll, not an election ;).

Also, I don't know how to turn off the poll. :embarassed: Jane, stop this crazy thing!

Just a thought ..... instead of the little green emeralds how about changing them to little mobile phones. Or, one mobile phone, that shows more bars for more reps.
Have a good day.

If it tears down the infrastructure that we have going on here then it is not worth it.
That is why I am opposed to it.
I think we need to move on and beyond the polls and voting and what not and get down to biz-i-ness.

I voted that I really don't care either way. Reps are sometimes
given when they should'nt be so it kind of blows it for me. But
hey, whatever floats your boat :coo2l:
I don't care either way. I don't like all the rep whoring, but that's just me. I look at the rep bar as the badge of honor for real contributions, not just for a teabag comment or something.
But let's not limit anything just yet. Let's have a field day that lasts a year or so...
