Spelling to change?

If the spelling of Portuguese is changed there will be new domains to reg, and some existing ones may lose value.

These changes are a kind of unification of the Portuguese language written and spoken in eight countries: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe (Portuguese is spoken in Equatorial Guinea and Chinese S.A.R. of Macau, but only for a few people).

But the changes will not be so big. For example, in Brazil, we´ll have approximately only 0,45% of the entirely vocabulary changed. In Portugal, a little more: 1,6%.

But of course, you´re right, there´ll be some good opportunities, and in other hand, some domains that will loose their values. Actually, I´m looking for them at the first group! :biggrin:

Just an information: Portuguese is the third most spoken occidental language, behind English and Spanish.

Hi Celo interesting how the changes affect Brasil less. Is that article right when it says the letter P would go? What about Sao Paolo and Oporto???

No, the article is not right!! They put the following correction on the site:

The following correction was printed in the Guardian's Corrections and clarifications column, Friday March 28 2008
We wrongly reported in the article below that a proposed reform of the Portuguese language could mean the letters c, p and h are removed from the alphabet. The Orthographic Accord signed by Portuguese-speaking countries seeks only to remove these letters from words where they are never pronounced, such as húmido (humid). The letters will remain in the alphabet for words where they are pronounced. We also said one of the signatories to the accord is Western Timor when we meant Timor-Leste (formerly East Timor). The latter has been corrected.

We´ll still have São Paulo and Porto!!! With "P", of course! :smile:

And this is one of the reasons Brasil will have less changes... we don´t use this "non-pronounced" letters. For example:

The world "Action":

Brasil: "Ação"
Portugal and the other countries: "Acção" (first "c" will drop)

So, in Brasil we´ll mantain more than 99,5% of the vocabulary. And other countries will change it a little more than 1,5%.
