Thanks, it looks like you have to pay for the service while wurfl is free.

True, but I like the webservice part..

I don't mind paying if it's affordable...

Hey, we got a mention! (thanks)

@hedgefund: you get what you pay for. Use the search at DetectRight.com (which is free), and you'll see how many devices WURFL is missing. Accuracy matters. According to my data (analysing WURFL is difficult because the manufacturer/model is so messy), WURFL profiles average out at 70% generic profile data and less than 60% handset coverage of major brands (less of more obscure ones).

Running a system on a commercial basis is the only way to get a decent data refresh rate, proper tech support and advice, features which appear quickly, and the ability to have an expert properly deploy a dedicated system. And we're still committed to supporting open standards (when the W3C gets round to ratifying them!). Especially since we're committed, passionate independent developers who have innovated off our own back.

Also, the web service to get W3C Core Vocab data from headers will be free (fair usage terms apply, which probably means 100,000 visitors per month).

So, we've beaten Dot Mobi's Device Atlas to launch, provided free search data in W3C Core Vocab, and a web service to retrieve it, except probably over a lot more handsets (we have over twice as many, assuming that they launch with pretty much all the Volantis handsets), and with a proper real-time detection service to boot. I think that's quite an achievement.

@GijsZePa
If you contact me by PM or @ chris@detectright.com I can liaise with you about your needs. I'm the designer of the system, btw, not some marketing lackey :) I take my device detection and its performance _personally_. Just because we have to charge doesn't mean we're not innovating. And we're actually very reasonable compared to the cost of filling the gaps in WURFL or handrolling/maintaining a system.

There's another data influx in the next couple of weeks which will add 400,000 datapoints into an already crowded system.

Hi Chris,

Welcome on the nr1 mobile forum ;)

Good to see skilled people like you present overhere. Detectright seems very promising to me and I like it very much that you commented personally on this forum.

At this moment I need some simple stuff like max screensize and javascript detection, but will start a large project in may (very large project) and I will probably need a tool like detectright for customizing the site ...

Thanks, Chris, for your inside info about device detection. It is very helpful for us to know we have a choice.
