A sitemap is pretty much mandatory to avoid 404 errors, improve your SEO and get your site properly crawled by Google.

From the Big G:

"Last month, Trevor spoke on the Sitemaps: Oversold, Misused or On The Money? panel at Search Engine Strategies in Chicago. After receiving a lot of great questions at the conference in addition to all the feedback we receive in our Help Group, we've pulled together a FAQ:"

ditto ... Couldn't have said it better myself ... Thanks coast.

At first glance it looks like it takes 60% of your time to develop site content and then 40% to organize and submit it to Google in a sitemap format that they like. A bit overwhelming at first read. Will have to spend more time going over that ino again ...and again. BTW, a link on that page to http://www.sitemaps.org/protocol.php is worth reading as well.

acc, don't lose sleep over creating and implementing sitemaps. Internally I've used a number of sitemap creators and they all work just fine. GSiteCrawler (http://gsitecrawler.com) makes it as simple as pushing a button. Try working with that and spending less time organizing and submitting the content.

Best,
