Compatible phones regarding apps?

if i made an app, how many of the major 3g phones could i put it onto.
the iphone obviously uses the sdk format but are the symbian, blackberry,google android, java, and others compatible with this format and would it take different app development to put the same app in all of these markets?

Welcome bayIdonsmith. If you want the same app to run on different smart phones, I think your option may be web apps using HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript.

There's too many different platforms!

However mobile websites cover every OS and device.

As for Java, I wish you luck in keeping your sanity and money throughout the Java Sun Verification process.

I reckon investing in a mobile web site is smarter than developing an app, you can always build apps for the devices that visit your mobile website once you have some real user data to tell you what your visitors are using if you don't have it already.

But in my eyes website wins over apps any day.
