I've been told privately about a new website for Muslims developed by a Swedish company that is investing over $5 million into the project.
These $5 million are being focused on a single .mobi: MyQuran.mobi
There are over 1 billions Muslims in the world, so this is a very valid, practical, and interesting use of a .mobi.
More info here (http://islamineurope.blogspot.com/2007/11/sweden-mobile-quran-recitations.html).
(Full Disclosure: I own Islam.mobi, so I'm quite pleased about this development.)

Great news indeed, Andres.
From several points;
The investment put forth into such an endeavor demonstrates the further commitment of individuals or enterprises in promoting and advancing this extenstion.
This truly demonstrates that this IS a global TLD. I harken back to the news of Onkosh.mobi/com. The Arabic speakers and community have shown that they are dedicated to reaching out to that community.
I have been following the growth of the mobile network in the Arab nations and among the Muslim faithful. Interestingly, there are several considerations in Muslim faith regarding the use of the mobile phone and mobile connectivity. I would imagine that this will meet with some opposition and many will turn to the Mullahs for guidance.
This is huge and monumental news from many accounts. It will be continuing efforts and commitments like this and even those smaller that will overshadow all the controversy. I am sure the overwhelming majority of the planet's population have never heard of Sedo. And most consumers will have no idea who or what mTLD is when they connect to a .mobi site.
And, I am happy that my numerous Arabic related domains may get some further consideration. Traffic has been steadily increasing.
Andres! Bravo and happy new year!

I can't help but believe that somehow Nokia is part of or an investor of this effort. There are an estimated 1.48 billion Muslims in the world.
Here is an example of a one such "certified" phone:
Recently, the Dubai-based Ilkone announced a Muslim phone of their own, called the Ilkone i800, which not only points toward Mecca, but also contains a complete electronic copy of the Koran (http://www.terra.net.lb/wp/Articles/DesktopArticle.aspx?ArticleID=149747&ChannelId=16) (along with a translation into English and a search engine). The phone will initially be released in Lebanon, Malaysia, Turkey and Indonesia. You can even use the phone to make calls. The phone is manufactured in Korea.

$5 million on one mobi . That is quite an investment for such a small, unknown ext. Great to here that organizations are putting that kind of money into .mobi. This could go a long way ladies and gentlemen

Mmmm.... I regged holywar.mobi in 2006, along with islamicringtones & muslimringtones.mobi (an oxymoron perhaps ;-) & thefight.mobi, biblepages.mobi
But I have to say that these pale into insignificance against 'islam.mobi' That is quite possibly one of the best privately held .mobi domains that I think I've seen... quite possibly 'ever!'
Just make sure that your capitalist ways don't earn you a fatwa (apologies if that's not spelt right)
Andres, I know that you have many 'killer' domains but...... "islam.mobi" .................. That is a 'Wowser' domain!!
congrats! - (how do you do it?)
Regards
Gary
i just wrote to aljazeera about their aljazeera.mobi not resolving anymore:
Hello,
i was a fan of your forward thinking aljazeera.mobi site for mobile devices.
Disappointed to see it is not resolving anymore.
Are you aware of this problem?
would be great to hear back from you on this.
Many Thanks
Guy
if anyone else interested, email here: uae@aljazeerapublishing.com
also Andres, your 'islam.mobi' is not resolving dude

I'm more familiar with the spelling "Koran" than "Quran", but "Quran" actually has more Google hits. I'm not usually a fan of adding "the" to the beginning of domains, but I regged TheKoran.mobi during landrush--someone beat me to Koran.mobi...
MM
i agree, but quran is 'the' spelling, and the better one
i have www.holy-koran.org
which i love and goes great with extension imho

Yet another early .mobi project that I was originally told about by mTLD during their hype phase that has since bit the dust: http://MyQuran.mobi
It was dropped and picked up (http://whoiz.mobi/MyQuran.mobi) in February of this year.
I just found out accidentally after searching for an unrelated thread.

It's very interesting to see how this story unfolds.
During the test period the service got 4,500 members in Sweden who downloaded 30,000 recitations. Björn Touqan says the next stage is to roll out globally. The big markets are in countries like Indonesia, Pakistan and the Middle East.
Was this site actually launched back in 2007?I don't understand why they dropped the site if their initial test was successful.
Was this site actually launched back in 2007?I don't understand why they dropped the site if their initial test was successful.
It was a live site run by a company with five employees:
http://www.linkedin.com/companies/myquran.mobi
Here is a 2008 interview in Swedish with the CEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azyBpOq770E
If you look around you can see various people use " myquran " in domain names.
Probably the decision to drop the project was a commercial one, given the availability of many free Koran downloads:
- This is an important service, both in Sweden and outside.
People who have no access to the Koran, they now have a service to help them in their daily lives.
People who can not get to a mosque, they now have a service that helps them to practice their faith.
And MyQuran also helps non-Muslims to create their own view of what the Koran really says.
It is open to all, just like traditional mosque in Islam is always, "said Imam Mahmoud Khalfi, president of the Islamic League in Sweden.
Readings of the Quran's suras are in Arabic, the only thing the Qur'an may be recited on.
Interpretations in Swedish, English and other languages will be added to the service within a short future, in order to facilitate for non-Arabic speaking Muslims and Westerners.
MyQuran kostar 30 kronor i månaden att använda. MyQuran costs 30 dollars a month to use.
Half of MyQurans net revenue will go to IFiS social projects and integration activities in Sweden.
