View Full Version : Question.......
Why do some choose mobile.whatever.com......instead of .mobi? Can someone explain the difference. The reason I ask is because I see the mobile getting promoted more than the .mobi's......like mobile.Bet.com. Just curious.

some companies use mobile.whatever.com, some use m.whatever.com some use wap.whatever.com some use whatever.com/mobile, etc. That is the problem. There are too many different variations. .mobi makes a standard and can even be shorter. google.mobi is less letters to type on your phone keypad than mobile.google.com. .mobi is still very new so it will take time for companies to learn more about it.

Using your example of mobile.bet.com it is NOT in fact a mobile site. It is a PC site that is for selling ringtones, wallpaper etc. This adds to the confusion of using a subdomain for a mobile site. Is mobile.domain.com a mobile friendly site or not? No one really knows until they try it out and waste a bunch of time for the site to not work on their phone (much like I just did). If/when BET used their bet.mobi (same owner by the way) then I would know BEFORE visiting the site that it in fact was friendly for mobile devices because the URL serves as a mobile trustmark for users. Keep an eye out for bet.mobi, I wouldn't be surprised if we see it being used in the future for delivering their mobile friendly content.
Now I get it. Thank y'all.:)
