It was all in Italian, which I don't speak, so I obviously didn't absorb as much as the rest of the participants.

However, I wanted to share with you guys what I did learn. First of all, today's conference made it clear to me that Italy is one of the leading .mobi countries, with the Italian government getting very much involved. In fact, the conference was actually held at the Ministry for Transportation. TIM, a .mobi backer and the largest Italian mobile operator, is also a big reason for why .mobi is starting off so strongly in Italy. Big Italian companies, banks, and government offices are joining the .mobi wave and if you consider that Italy has the largest 3G userbase (as % of mobile users) in Europe, it has a bright future ahead of it.

Here are some of the developed Italian .mobi's I learned about today:
iTim.mobi (http://iTim.mobi) (different from Tim.mobi)
TelecomItalia.mobi (http://TelecomItalia.mobi) (corporate site)
Virgilio.mobi (http://Virgilio.mobi) (Horizontal Portal site)
ENI.mobi (http://ENI.mobi) (Italy's largest industrial company with a market cap of over $100 billion)
Dada.mobi (http://Dada.mobi) (Mobile version of Dada.net, which seems to be big in Italy)
Borghi.mobi (http://Borghi.mobi) (some type of club in Italy)Of course, we already know about Polizia.mobi (Italy's State Police) and now the Ministry of Transportation is apparently developing a .mobi as well.

Anyway, I also met Suzanne Flood, Business Development Manager for mTLD, who advised me that they're planning a forumWeb.mobi conference in Spain, which I'll obviously attend as well.

So as you guys can see, Italy is kicking some serious .mobi ass. I think those of you who invested in Italian .mobi's will do well.

UPDATE: I just received an e-mail with the forumWeb.mobi presentations that were made in Rome, you can check them out here (http://collaudo.mobi/agenda.html). (A few of them are actually in English.)

My hat off to you Andres for doing this!

Now that you know about Italy and their plans regarding .mobi, do you feel more confident about .mobi and it's future in europe Andres?

Now that you know about Italy and their plans regarding .mobi, do you feel more confident about .mobi and it's future in europe Andres?Absolutely. Seeing first-hand so much that's happening with .mobi in so many different countries only increases my confidence in the future of this young extension. No other TLD has ever had this level of direct exposure at such high levels of government and business this early on in the game.

I recall someone saying (perhaps on this forum) that the Italians and especially the Italian youths love saying "moe bee".

Very good (no GREAT) perspective indeed.

I think the US is perhaps about a year away from massive penetration, market speaking. But the news on BofA.mobi reaching 500K subscribers is monumental here in the states.

This will further validate the extension and get notice by competitors and other major Fortune 500 companies.

Andres, one day we will all drink the local vino en Veneto y Roma!

Viva Mobi! Viva BofA! Viva Italia!

Lucky me. I read Italian. Actually read it better than I speak it.

I have a tendency to mix Italian and Spanish together when speaking.

Not many Italians in North Carolina but molto Spanish.

So I guess instead of Spanglish I am speaking Spaniano.

Thanks Andres,

'State of the Market and Key Trends' by Fiamma Petrovich of M:Metrics was an intersting read. Informative presentation with relevant stats & graphs.

Excerpt from Petrovich's presentation.

************************************************** ***********
In Europe 3G subscribers are 48,6 millions. Italy has the highest 3G handsets reach (32,4%).
The consumption of mobile contents and services is supported by Advance Browsers diffusion.

Browsing is becoming the main way to access mobile contents. News and Information reach 15-20% of Mobile users, while Social Networking is rising (1,5% in France to 3,5% in USA).

Mobile Multimedia usage is mainly linked to the exploitation of digital resources already owned or generated by the users themselves. Sideloading music from PCs and sharing videos within familiars and friends are spreading practices. Only few people listen to songs downloaded by M-store or watch videos/TV programs offered from operators.

Push SMS is a mass-market tool: in Spain more than 70% of mobile subscribers received a promotional SMS, in Italy more than 50%.

In Europe about 20% of mobile subscriber are under 24 years old. This young segment represents 30% of all Mobile Content users and 40% of Mobile Video/Tv users.
In Italy 1 on 3 users has an handset bought in the last 12 months while only 8% of all mobile users has a subscription made within the year. Data service plan have been added by 1,7 million users.

Virgilio was a leading Portal in Italy till Google got the number 1 place there too.

Dada is a massive ISP, listed on the stock market and does a lot things.

I knew and I posted about Eni on NP.

Glad to know that my little Country is doing well within .mobi , I want to see them knocking on my e-mail asking me for CARABINIERI.mobi  which the government could not be bothered to reg. So now Polizia has its .mobi but CARABINIERI not.....

Plus my pack of Italian cities will just get nicer :)

Thanks for the report from Rome!

Thanks for all this info. I read that in Italy there are 1.4 mobile phones per person... Italians are very, very style conscious and also their kids live at home much later than in many other countries, partly due to inflexible housing and labour markets IMO. So high use of mobile internet on up to the minute phones is to be expected.

PS Polizia and Carabinieri do not like each other, lots of jokes about that, perhaps you could put those on the site or perhaps polizia will buy the carabinieri name out of spite?

Yes your comments about the italians are correct. I lived my mother till I was 28 but I also know of professionals like doctors or lawyers (my friends) that lived with their parents till their 40s :embarassed: (mom`s cooking is the best , is not it? )

But there is no way that Polizia can even use 1 Euro without Government permission.

An italian friend of my in Rome lived by his parents till his 33 (due to the house prices in Rome and suburbs)
