View Full Version : **Would you like to be featured in a book about .mobi domainers?**
Javier Marti
07-02-2007, 01:07 PM
Hi guys
My name is Javier Marti, the founder of Trendirama.com, Trendirama.tv and Trendinews.com, and I am preparing a book/ebook/whatever about you guys...about .mobi domainers.
I am not sure when I'll release it, but I have the strong impression that .mobi domainers are visionaries and one day it will be very interesting for domainers and the general public to know who they were, what their dreams were, how it all started, etc...and compare their story and how their investments and future vision shaped their future.
The book will have the format of an interview to each domainer, or an easy to search collection of domainer's profiles, I am not sure yet.
If you would like to be featured, please answer the questions below.
Needless to say that the people featured in the book would get it free. (maybe everyone will get if for free, too early to tell)
Since I would like this book to be successful and I am in the draft stage of this project..**please let me know any other question that you would like me to be ask to domainers. If it is reasonable and interesting, I'll add it**
In order for the book to be successful, I would like to feature maybe around 20 domainers and perhaps a few side stories. Since I don't want to discriminate, I would like you guys to help me identify who are the biggest -visible!- .mobi domainers, so one of the questions will be about that.
Please don't hate me if you are not featured, since I am not sure what the final format of the book will be, and depending of your participation, the project will be more or less complex and time consuming for me.
However, if you want to send your answers to the questions in, even if you don't think you'll be featured, you are more than welcome to do so. I can't guarantee that you'll be there but you could be partially featured or mentioned.
Being in this book would give the option to domainers not only to tell their stories and get to know each other, but also to show the world -if it all works out as planned- that you were visionaries and saw it coming before anyone else. I think it would be a nice document to show to your children/grandchildren...don't you think?
Please answer the questions below if interested, and send them to info@trendirama.com (niquel757@gmail.com) in plain text or email format, so they're easy to cut and paste.
//THIS IS MY DRAFT FOR THE QUESTIONS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT ME TO ASK OTHER DOMAINERS. All questions are optional, but please, answer the truth!
PLEASE ANSWER AS EXTENSIVELY AS YOU CAN. The more you tell, the more chances to be featured. Add as many details as you want, within reason! ;)//
1) Who do you think that are the main 19 people that I should interview for this book apart from you? (Real names/screen names 2) and where to find them or name and email)
3) Who are you? (real name, surname)
4) What is your internet nickname?
5) Are you a contributor in any forum or website related to .mobi? Since when?
6) Where do you work from? (city, country)
7) What's is your occupation today?
8) How did you hear about .mobi?
9) When did you hear about .mobi, exactly?
10) When did you buy your first name?
11) Why exactly do you think .mobi will be valuabe? Why did you decide to invest in it?
12) Are you a developer? As of today, what are your plans regarding development of your .mobi names?
13) How many domains do you hold approximately, as of today ( please inculde date in your answer)?
14) Are you an investor in any other extensions? Which ones? How many names? Tell us a bit about it.
15) What are the ten domains that you think most valuable or are you most proud of?
16) Why are you proud of them?
17) Any other comments about you or your story that you would like to add (you, your family, your dreams, your motivations, your enemies, internet, the future, the past, .mobi's naysayers...anything you want to tell the world)
Pleae bear in mind that I am in the planning stages of the book, and some questions may be added/ommited as I see fit.
Thank you for your cooperation and look forward to hear from you!

Welcome Javier! Sounds like an interesting project and you've come to the right place. I'll be working on your questions this week.

Javier,
I recommend that you read 'Founders At Work' subtitled 'Stories of Startups Early Days' by Jessica Livingston.
To give you an idea, it says on the cover "Interviews with the founders of Adobe, Apple, Blogger, Craigslist, Flickr, Hotmail, Lotus, Paypal....." etc. The format sounds similar to what you are describing.
For all my fellow mobi domainers on this forum, this is an awesome book that will help inspire you as we continue down the mobi path that we are on (I have no interest in promoting this book, just found it on the shelf of an airport bookstore).
It gives detailed insight into many examples of 'going it alone' on a project or venture, that is....believing in something, or being committed to something, that everyone around you doesnt necessarilly believe in!

Hi guys.
Thank you very much for your interest and for starting to send me your replies to my questions. I have made a list of FAQs respoding to all the questions that you asked me privately, you can see it here
http://trendinews.com/?p=64
There are comments there about privacy and confidentiality, the project itself, my motivations, etc...
I look forward to receiving your replies and featuring you in the book!

UPDATE: Thanks to all of you for your feedback
Seven days after having posted my idea about the book, I am pleased to say that I have received already around 5 questionaires back with the responses. thank you to all of you who responded, and thank you to Scandiman for supporting this project.
the good news is that the questionaires started to arrive, and you guys have interesting stories and points of view that will make an interesting book.
The bad news is that I need many more questionaires back...I can't make a book based on the experience of 5 domainers, because it wouldn't represent the "whole spectrum" of you guys. As part of my questions, some people already told me names of people that should be featured, but I would prefer that they approach me first by sending me the questionaire.
If you have any concern about privacy or anything else, feel free to email me as some of you have already done, and I'll answer your questions.
Alternatively, see my post in Trendinews.com about the .mobi book.
**please keep on sending me your answers to the questions by email and help me encourage more people to participate. The end result can be really nice if we all contribute a little bit!**

Hahahhahahah. Don't worry about that Gerry. It is better to have too much rather than too little info. The more you tell me the more chances I can see an interesting angle to your story! Please tell anyone you think that should be there and may not have seen this thread! thanks

someone asked me: >>>>Have you been involved in other projects previously of a similar nature and possibly have some referrals?
No. Apart from all what you see published by me in Trendinews.com and the trendirama.com project (of which I am the designer, editor and organizer), no, I don't have any written referrals that I can show you.
It is up to domainers really if they want to contribute or if there is book or not in the end.
I understand domainers concerns, but I have also expressed that the questions are optional, and everyone is free to contribute/not contribute.
I already received back some questionaires and will start to work on those if they keep on coming, and whoever decides to be there, will be there.
I am not so sure these concerns are so well funded at this point, but I can understand them.
Regarding a previous project like this, no, this is my first book. So far I have only written articles.
If you want to know more about me, Google my name. You'll find me in a few places.

Thanks for the bump onassis. Forgot about this project. I was looking into submitting my info and, low and behold....according to Javier's "FAQ" section, seems my 102 mobi domain names make my story unworthy. :confused2:
To quote:
"How many domains do I have to have to be featured in the book?
I’d say minimum 200 .mobi domains. That shows that you start to be serious about it and believe in the extension."
Wow...so because I can't afford 200 or more mobi's, my belief in the extension and seriousness about my piddly investment is unworthy? :y:
Believe it or not, the amount of money invested does not equate to "interest" nor sincerity in belief. Not all of us are fortunate enough to be able to afford mass registrations (nor the renewals).
So, with this in mind, my unworthy developments (both present and future), names and myself humbly bow out.
Good luck with your project.

No, no...send me your answers! The 200 mark was just a guess when I had no idea how many domains people have or how much interest there would be in this project. IF you have 102 you are ok. I just don't want people to think that I'll feature everyone and be dissapointed later if they're not there. BUt if you want to be there...please send me your questions as soon as you can. Recently one of you PMed me:
""i reread your initial post. i'm unsure that looking for the "biggest - visible - domainers" is really what you're looking for. wouldn't a better read be different takes on investing in .mobi., those that came in first, those that came in later, even some that feel that mobi is a rediculous waste of time, like quotes from schilling. all leading up to a better, rounder pioneer mentality, than a money grab.(...)""
And my reply was:
sorry to take some time to respond, I didn't see your message before.
Rest assured that I also thought about the things you said and will include them in the book.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR SUGGESTIONS!!!!!
In any case, please pm me or send me ANYTHING interesting that you think that should be there nd I may overlook
I am a regular at Frank's and you can be sure that him and XX and others will be quoted in the book
I am also about to initiate a thread I think...about .mobi milestones (kind of timeline of events and its impact on .mobi domainers) so your participationon this will also be welcome.
If you and others help me, you'll be mentioned in the credits too for your assistance, and should the project take off interestingly, I'll share with collaborators anything that comes off it, in true Trendirama.com's spirit!
Thank you X, keep on sending me anything you think should be in the book!
........
this applies to all of you guys...
so
1) send me the questionaire if you have not done so yet
2) don't hesitate to send me your suggestion on how to make the book more interesting. This is the perfect time to do it. I can't assure that everything will be included, but I'll do what I can to accommodate everyone's interests and good suggestions there.
Thank you for your cooperation and support so far!

Book is around 25% done. Table of contents and first draft done. It'll be more complete than initially planned, since I need to give an overview to readers in many issues that come natural to us but may not be familiar to them at all (why mobile? what does exactly a domainer do? etc)

Regarding affiliates, I am not sure if I'd call them so if the book is free, but definitely that I'll show you guys the book before anyone else and if you like it, you can help me promote it as much as we can since I feel it'll help the .mobi extension to get much better known...

Why mobi. -
1) PC internet classified for .com and mobile internet classified for .com.
2) Mobile much cheaper and lighter than PC.
3) .mobi can fit into the screen of mobile faster and more compatability.
4) In view of convenience and privacy will be easier in view of user when using .mobi on the mobile. 247 mobile working environment even at toilet.

Thanks for your concern Onnasis. I am in the middle of research and writing the first complete rough draft. It'll be more complete than first planned in the sense that I have to address more stuff than initially expected.
Please understand that although I go as fast as I can, the creative process cannot be forced, and my other commitments take a lot of my time too.

For most of us, the dotmobi game started on September 26, 2006.
So why not call the book September26.mobi or Sept26.mobi ?

Whatever you call the book, September26.mobi/Sept26.mobi will be a great name for a movie or TV reality show...which my pal, an up-and-coming actor, has already shown interest in...

I am not sure I get your point dotmobiservices. A little bird told me anyway ;) that you have some interesting domains for the mobibook and that I'll have to pay premium for them, which could not be the case, since this project will not generate any direct revenue for me (I am doing it more for credibility than for money. Actually, at the moment I am losing money :( due to opportunity costs.)
But anyway, the sep 26 date is interesting. Is that date when .mobi started officially? I can't remember. Or does it mean something else? Tell me more about it! I haven't got to the "timeline" part of the book, so I am not too familiar with exact dates right now.
If you want to be on the list that I am releasing for people who are helping me do research for the book, please PM your email address as soon as possible, since I think I am sending some questions out today.

THE COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS OF BEING IN THE MOBIBOOK
recently I received and answered this email. The information can be useful to you too!
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi Javier,
Would you please give me a cost/benefit analysis of what it would mean to me personally to fill out the book questionnaire vs. not to complete it?
I originally did not want to be in the book for the same reason there is such an uproar about the domainer database that Jay created and gogo posted, mainly privacy. What can you tell me to put those concerns at ease, or not?
Thanks.
...............
Mmmm....you are asking me to do something that I don't like doing, which is selling something :)
Firs of all, let me say that most questions I ask are general in nature, and domainers are free to answer them, to their convenience. If they are too incomplete, or if they answer too few of them, I may simply not include their profile in the book.
Having said that, the benefits of being included there, I guess would be:
- You would have an impartial proof that you were a pioneer in the .mobi scene. This may not mean much to you today, but as everything related with me, think about the future...that could give you interesting credibility one day, that you can use to be a consultant, or you maybe the next person hired by godaddy or namemedia or any of the other companies springing up like mushrooms in this space...
The exposure on the book can give you valuable exposure to you as a writer, developer or whatever way you come across to the public through your answers.
- Exposure on the book would increase traffic to your websites as people would check your projects out.
- Your presence in the book would give added exposure to your portfolio of names. I understand that many of your domains are for sale, or you wouldn't mind selling them for the right price, correct? Well, by talking about them in the book, you can reach a much further audience, day in, day out, for as long as the book lives, since I don't plan to get rid of that section of the book for quite some time.
- People like to help. By letting them know about your projects, maybe they'll contact you with leads or advice to do your websites better.
- Your being in the book would give you authority in forums and other online places where you may need a "presentation" card. If you don't have one already, you can tell people, "you can read about me on page XX of this book"
- Your being in the book would be something nice for your family to see, validate your efforts, and for them to understand that not only you are not alone in what you do, but what you do can actually be quite smart. And you were there from the start... Wouldn't it be nice to show that to a grandchild one day?
More or less, those are some of the benefits that quickly come to my mind...there may be more that I forget to include, or don't know about.
If you decide to be part of the +12 or 13 people who already sent me their answers or not, it is up to you...there is no pressure. I never beg :)
If you want to be in, send me your answers as soon as you can.
Regards!

Exactly 74.8991596% done as of today.
In talks with editor (someone in the domain world) to make a first correction of the current draft.
next is re-writing/polishing by me, and final revision by editors. If you would like to gain fame and glory by helping me edit the book, please pm me asap
Basic requirements:
English as mother tongue
reliability
be willing to work with me and possibly another editor during a couple of weeks -maybe two hours a day?- in this project, sending the draft back and forth until we get it nice and shiny.Final correction required will be mainly polishing grammar and style.
The good thing about one of you helping me correct it is that a domainer will understand exactly what I mean, even if I wasn't able to express it 100% in the most correct way...so the editing will go faster
Thank you guys for all your support so far

I'll be sending you shortly emails back with the information you previously sent me, so that you can make any updates you want to it. Please send it back to me as soon as possible, since we are mere weeks away from the release of the mobibook. (working hard on it, bear with me!)
Also, please try not to change or update too much the information you previously sent me a few months ago, so we keep it authentic, like a snapshot from that time of "pioneering endeavours"...
If anyone new has more than 300 names and want to participate, see the questions at the top of this thread and send me the info as soon as possible. Thanks

**Organizing the mobibook team **
Thank you very much to all those who offered help. I have lots of ideas about the book and accompannying website(s?) and with your help it can only get better for all of us, and ultimately the sale price of our domains.
Nice to confirm that I am not alone on this.
Now, I hate to have to do it, but after careful consideration to how to manage this project in the best way, I would like to ask the contributors that have contacted me through PM (and others if you'd like to be "in"), to do the following:
- get a Skype account (+ Skype)
- get a gmail account.
I know this is a pain and I am sorry, but it is the only way to unify efforts at this time. Some people have yahoo for chat, others have Hotmail Messenger. Some contacted me through email, others only in the forum. Some use their name, some their nickname...
It becomes too complicated for me to send the info out without forgetting anyone...
Moreover, the Gmail account will be useful for different people to collaborate in one document as in Google Docs, saving us emails being sent back and forth for brainstorming, editing, etc...
This can be a really exciting project and much bigger than I imagined, thanks to putting together all our brain power through something that will benefit us all in the short, medium and long term.
Please let me know your gmail and skype account soon by PM, so I add you to the list and you don't miss any post about this project.
Next step is to organize an open conference call as soon as possible, where we can see which one of us does what.
(And the more we are, the easier it'll be.)
In any case, none of us can do as much as we can all do together and I know I am very limited alone. I am sure there are things I didn't see that you'll show me and teach me soon and look forward to it.
Thank you everyone again!

Hello,
The mobibook is nearing completion. I am already putting together people's answers, and as promised, I am sending this email with your reply (below) for you to review your contribution if you wish.
Although I would prefer that you leave your original answers in (they are a nice snapshot of the past) you can modify them if you want and send them back to me asap
Please eliminate any kind of sign (vertical lines, ">" symbol) in the answers you send me, since I have to do this for several people and doing so you ensure I can paste your info ready for edit, with little chances of error.
Thank you
