Once you have got people into your mobile site it can be difficult to keep them coming back as mobile bookmarking is not exactly user-friendly, plus, you can't always see the URL of the site while you are browsing on mobile. Anyway I just noticed a couple of big mobile sites using quite a nice way of getting people to bookmark something on mobile more easily - contact/ VCF cards which load into your phone address book and record the URL.

Flirtomatic Example

Flirtomatic have a bookmark prompt in the bottom right of the home page:

After you click it they prompt you do download the business card and explain how to use it.

Itsmy.com example

Itsmy.com use exactly the same system - the bookmark prompt is on the bottom of the homepage and takes you directly to a business card download.

Here is what you download - its the same for Flirtomatic.

http://jamescoops.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341e2daf53ef0111688a744e970c-800wi (http://jamescoops.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341e2daf53ef0111688a744e970c-pi)

Not a bad little trick is it? It is great to see some of the problems with mobile being ironed out as we get big players like Flirto and Itsmy investing in usability research and product development.

I'd already tried VCards in past for my sites and they really work! However,I prefer Visual Bookmarks over VCards.Anyway,it is still a good idea.Thumbs up James for sharing!

Hey that's a good point about visual bookmarks - is there anyway of easily creating these? I know getjar.com has a great system for creating them for its own platform but how do you do it for your own site?

Dear James!

I use GetJar.com myself and I haven't found any substitute for it.

However here is a relatively easy alternative. It is pretty dumb but it works anyway.

Visual Bookmark in .jar format
http://wap.bookmarkwap.com/data/u/jar.jsp?site=mobility.mobi

Visual Bookmark in .jad format
http://wap.bookmarkwap.com/data/u/jad.jsp?site=mobility.mobi

These bookmarks are for Mobility.mobi.Replace the mobility.mobi url with your own site's and you are on your way.

Thanks for that Sweet Blossom

@james Never mind for not knowing :) Glad that you asked ;) Here it goes formally.

VCard is a digital portable business card format. It is a simple text file with an extension .vcf .VCard stands for Versit Card.

Here is a template of a VCard for mjelly.

BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:2.1
N:Mobile,mjelly
FN:mjelly Mobile
ORG:mjelly Inc.
TITLE:mjelly
TEL;WORK;VOICE:1234567890
TEL;CELL;VOICE:1234567890
EMAIL;PREF;INTERNET:[email protected]
URL;WORK:http://m.mjelly.com
ADR;WORK:UK
END:VCARD

Copy from BEGIN... to END... into a separate file.Call it vcard.vcf and save it somewhere.Click on its locator and see it in action.

Here is a small legend for VCards that might be helpful in creating them.

BEGIN defines the beginning of the VCard.
VERSION defines the version of the VCard (most popular being 2.1)
N defines Name of the Person.
FN defines the Full Name of the Person.
NICKNAME defines the nickname of the person.
PHOTO defines the photo of the person.
BDAY defines the birthday of the person.
ADR defines the address of the person.
LABEL defines the printable encoded data.
TEL defines the telephone numbers.
EMAIL defines the email addresses.
GEO defines the latitude and longitude.
TITLE defines the title of the VCard.
ROLE defines the occupation of the person.
LOGO defines the logo of organisation.
AGENT defines agent of organisation.
ORG defines the name of organisation.
NOTE defines any additional data.
SOUND defines any soundmark.
URL defines any web addresses.
UID defines any user ids.
END declares the end of VCard.

There are a lots of other markers as well. You would probably like to Google them out.

thanks Sweet Blossom :-)

btw is there any way of using the getjar visual bookmark outside of getjar?

e.g. can you download it and then ***er it up on your own site?

Sweet-Blossom

@james I think it is possible download all the versions of your getjar bookmarks, upload them on your server and ***er them directly.

However,it is not so practical if we consider device detection conspiracies and all sorts of targeting correct versions to corresponding devices.
