What you are seeing is the internet trial of something many felt were 3-5 years away.
But not so.
IDN in my opinion is much like .mobi...most felt (and still feel) that both were not really needed and would take a long time to catch onto.
But as we have seen with .mobi it is going at a much faster pace than many anticipated, including me. That is why I have invested in .mobi as well as IDN.
IDN is a very tough game. Much more so than .mobi. You need native speakers to assist.
China has 1.6 billion people. China is practically giving away the .cn for one yuan (13 cents). China wants more .cn in the world than .com and will have more computers in the world than any country. We know this can happen due to their fierce economic growth in addition to becoming very wired for the Olympics. China has already mandated that all official Chinese offices and officials use the .cn.
China has been wanting their Chinese characters for years. And lets face it...with the influence and power it wields will get what it wants.
Now add in this factor. India is expected to surpass China in population by 2015. India has already publicly stated that it would like its citizens to use .in and is also pushing for using native language and native scripts, primarily Hindi and Bengali.
ICANN and the world can not ignore that the world does not think, speak, and work in English Words and Roman Characters.
Yes, you are about to see a very fractured internet. Browsers are getting smarter and will be able to auto detect and translate into language of choice.
Where does mobi fit in? very well in my opinion. Take the 260+ ccTLD's in the world. So people want to use suffixes or prefixes like .mobile, wap., m., etc. for all ccTLD's?
Imagine having to remember that many possibilities of reaching a mobile site. Or just imagine no matter where you are you go to .mobi for the mobile internet.
That is what I see and envision. I see .mobi being a unifying factor in all this mess.
Rock on .mobi!

So imagine instead of .cn for China (which are ASCII English characters) it would be dot whatever in the native characters of the language.
