Spent all day yesterday at the Mobile 2.0 conference. It was a very full one day event that touched on many aspects of the mobile web and mobility in general. http://www.mobile2event.com/ (http://www.mobile2event.com/)
The event was presented by Mobile Monday (http://www.mobilemonday.net/) and The Open Group (http://www.opengroup.org/) and was very well conceived and executed IMO.
Throughout the day were various panel discussions with specialists on the specific topics.
-User Experience, Usability and Design
-Emerging Technologies
-The Venture Capital Perspective
-The State of the Mobile Industry
-Disruptive or New Business Models
Plus some other presentations from various vendors and sponsors, with one presenter promoting their mobile search tool, taptu.mobi (http://taptu.mobi) :) Check it out.
The keynote was by Tomi Ahonen (http://www.tomiahonen.com/) who presented some very interesting facts regarding mobile web. For example, in Japan, mobile books account for $82 million in annual sales, cyworld in S. Korea has over 30,000 businesses offering over 500,000 branded items for sale via a mobile web interface, and flirtomatic has sold over 3.5 million mobile "virtual" red roses at 23 pence ea. If anyone has an opportunity to hear a presentation by Tomi regarding the mobile space, do it!
Also was pleased to see James Pearce, VP of Technology at mTLD was part of the panel on emerging technologies. I need to buy an audio recorder for future events like this, mTLD is lucky to have James on board, he's got a strong vision for the future of mobile web and also how .mobi can fit into it.
Also great to hear the VC perspective, they are on the prowl for emerging ideas and companies in the mobile space. Seems like there are many eyes staring at the mobile space looking at it as the future. very promising indeed.
For anyone serious about the mobile space, events such as this one are well worth attending, both for the information you can glean as well as the contacts you can make.
