_____________

The Goethe-Institut (GI) (Goethe Institute in English) is a non-profit German cultural institution operational worldwide, promoting the study of the German language abroad and encouraging international cultural exchange and relations. The Goethe-Institut also fosters knowledge about Germany by providing information on German culture, society and politics. This includes not only the exchange of films, music, theatre, literature, and the like, but also the values of civil society. Goethe cultural societies, reading rooms, and exam and language centers have played a central role in the cultural and educational policies of Germany for close to 60 years.

* Sorry Blitzpotz, I have never visited one before (* Atlanta, Boston,Chicago, San Francisco,LA,NYC & Washington Goethe Institute in USA--they're everywhere around the globe!). But, this must be the German equivalent of what Alliance Franįaise is for Francophiles :coo2l:

Great mobi site!

Anyway, came across it today.

Wow, this is great find. As the Goethe Institute is related to the German Federal Foreign Office I wonder how much time it takes until the whole Federal Government of Germany goes mobi.

I'm delighted to see something positive associated with the name Goethe for very local reasons. Sacramento area businessman and philanthropist Charles Goethe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Goethe) founded Sacramento State University back in the 40's following WW2. Those receiving the funds conveniently overlooked Goethe's passion for eugenics and white supremacy, but his past finally caught up with him as the local govt weighed the political correctness of naming public places honoring someone whose beliefs and dealings are completely contrary to the cultural and ethnic diversity of the region. So after years of idle talk the govt finally took action this year (a rarity) and removed his name from a major local park and a middle school. But the funds of course were kept, the lesson being that the money of a racist is welcomed but kindly keep your name.

/end rant and thread derailment lol

Goethe.mobi is yet another .mobi website being promoted. Europe continues it's embrace of .mobi and this time the reach is global. Great stuff!

That'd be great!

Isn't this institute named after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The writer of Faust?

Well, he is, of course. If you are interested in this author I recommend Die Leiden des jungen Werther. This early work describes Schizophrenia (eventually bipolar disorder) long before it had been discribed as a disease, so itīs very "modern" including the elements love pangs and suicide.
Personally I prefer Friedrich Schiller when reding German classics. He is less genious, but more revolutionary than Goethe. He represents early democratic efforts after the revolutions in the US and in France (while Goethe was rather integrated in the political system). Main works of Schiller: Don Juan and Maria Stuart, recommended to read.

Read it, even now, I imagine that there are many high teens around the world who'd read it and imagine themselves to be in Werther or Lotte's shoes. This is so that age 17,18,19 yr old sensitivity...great novel.

I have not directly read Schiller's works per se, and I should, But Carl Jung in his Analytical psychology works quoted his works a lot ( him and Goethe).
I 'd imagine that a person can study, comparative literature between Weimar classicism and Analytical psychology and spend good chunk of their life doing so.

Thanks Noonoo!

@Pred & blitzpotz:

PSSSST,

Since we have started this Post-a-thon inspired, I want RESULTS!
http://www.naturalnews.com/gallery/comstock/Man-tie-breaking-pencil.jpg

Now, during the duration while we have this " thon", we have anointed Scandiman to be our achiever.
He will get a fitness trainer, stylist plus bodyguards to protect his saintly fingers, so that he can be all that he can to " produce" & type freely!

That's right, he will get the Hollywood star treatment for his saintly hands.

You are not to hassle him in anyway in any threads and hinder him from typing.
As a matter of fact, you're to refer to his fingers as HRF (His Royal Fingerness).

And I will personally see to it that this is achieved!

Fascinating point Scandi, so will the Rhodes scholarships be renamed in view of Mr Rhodes imperialist racist history? They could name them the Zimbabwe scholarships...

Goethe was a famous ladies man, so why not advertise that classes at the Goethe Centre offer a chance to meet people? Their offices in London and Paris are super places.

In the UK we have some throat lozenges called Werthers... I always wonder if they are meant to induce (manic) depression or cure it.

You've lost me on this one, We have candy's here called Werther's Original, is this the same thing you're referring to and what is the connection to mental illness (besides the mind altering impact of sugar ... don't knock it, it was a successful defense in a murder trial in SF http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_White)

Wait so this guy name D.J. White in SFO back in 1970s killed a mayor plus a city supervisor named H. Milk and later confessed to wanting to also harm a person name Silver. And he blamed Twinkie ( pale looking snack with creamy white filling) and got a manslaughter rather than murder.

Notice how the names are very pale sounding, chromatically; Silver, White and milk. Even the snack in question is pale kind...Twinkie
Ironic! stranger than fiction

I don't think it was the sugar in Twinkie but, perhaps the preservatives in it that caused him to snap. :embarassed:

I wonder what Sacramento's late Charles Goethe would think about SF's Bay to Breakers "run".

In a frail attempt to make this relevant to the thread, it looks like the SF offices of the Goette Institut is only a few thousand feet from the starting place for the Bay to Breakers run... what an opportunity to market their mobi.
