In this two part article, we will introduce mobile positioning based on CellID, and we will take a look at OpenCellID, the open source database of CellIDs. We will demonstate how to use OpenCellID through some simple examples.

that would be so cool if it were based on http headers from the device rather than having to make an api call from a java app........

The concept is well received, but the problem is the most carriers don't populate that field in the user agent, because giving away the info will dilute their GPS business.

This is the conclusion I made one year ago, I did not follow since then. It is possible the carriers have changed their mind.
