Just got a press release from MAG (Mobile Advisory Group):

"Dublin, Ireland and Ottawa, Ontario June 28, 2007 – The dotMobi Advisory Group (MAG) and the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) today signed an Industry Alliance Memorandum of Agreement to support each organisation's initiatives.

The MAG – a dotMobi-accredited, independent not-for-profit global industry forum – and the CWTA – the authority on wireless issues, developments and trends in Canada – agree to promote the development of mobile Internet services through .mobi domains as well as a common set of industry best practices for mobile browsing, content, email, commerce and advertising."
The Full article is worth reading:

While many domain investors look at Mobi as just another worthless new extension, they are missing the things like this happening behind the scenes because they have already drawn their conclusion without considering facts. For those who are here I hope press releases like these illustrate how well organized and connected Dot mobi is to the corporate world. This is why Mobi is not just another TLD. It is Mtld's interconnectedness to the business world and the desire to create a brandable platform for the mobile internet that makes me believe Dot Mobi is a legitimate TLD with great potential.

Cheers!

Seems the population is focused on the east and west with little in between. Are the data plans and usage similar on both coasts?

Well the companies are national. Rogers, Fido have GSM networks and Telus/Bell use CDMA.. Rogers/Findo tends to be more $$ on the Web Surfing side.. And Telus seems to be more expensive on the other stuff side.

They kind of average out. However Telus has the cheapest Internet surfing package avaliable.

Packages (Alone):
Rogers: (Monthly)
5MB = $5 (3c extra per kb)
10MB = $10 (3c extra per kb) (The one I have, works great.. Most sites are about 5KB's)

Telus you have packages depending on the phone (Blackberries only)
Otherwise it is roughly 12c per a page.. No matter the KB..

The only difference is the tax east has to pay compared to west.. West also has a few more Mobility Carriers (SaskTel, etc) and central Canada has even more.. Which make it slightly cheaper there as they have to compete.

But for example.. namepros.com takes about roughly 8MB's for the homepage.. And about 20KB's for the mobile version.
Do you see the major difference there? That is why I believe even with the iPhone there will still be a need for .mobi

For example.. Open up notepad and just random keep entering text.. And see how long it will take you to even reach 1KB of text. Now make a simple image with text in photoshop and see the smallest you can save it.
Most sites these days are image extensive.. EVEN with a better way to view it.. The costs are still rocket high. Mobile Internet will never be as fast as PC internet.. Because PC's can be plugged in.. They can be made huge.. Cell phones are small. They don't have room for a wireless card.. (For now) and they are using simple transponder technology. Even if you manage to get all that.. The memory inside of a Cell Phone is not big enough to cache the huge images.. And the site will freeze anyways.
