View Full Version : Timeline of .mobi events for the Mobibook

Hi guys,
Some will be pleased to know that the mobibook is already under way...
I am working on the diagram of the book, contents, order, etc...
One of the chapters is a timeline of .mobi events.
I have the timeline from the mltd already, but would like a more informal timeline of events on which we all agree
So far, thinking quickly I have the following important events that should be mentioned, but WOULD LIKE YOUR SUGGESTIONS ON ANY OTHER EVENTS I AM MISSING AND SHOULD BE THERE
- Creation of .mobi
- RFP names
- Namepros .mobi
- Creation of mobility
- Iphone (and debate about it)
- First spotting of billboard with a .mobi in it
- Bofa.mobi video
- Bofa .mobi mass promotion? (we'll see on this one)
etc...
2) Also, I know it is a taboo subject here...but I'll need to know the story of exactly what happened in the old place and how this influenced (or provoked) the foundation of Mobility.
Can someone that knows and was involved in those happenings tell me exactly what happened? Your anonimity will be respected if you wish not to be mentioned. I just need to know a bit of the story to make the book more personal...
Please remember to contribute to the timeline of events on any milestones you consider relevant to the progression of .mobi!

Sorry bro and this is just my opinion. But, why are you making the mobi book now?
Maybe I misunderstood but is the book going to be in progress for the next 4 years or is it going to be done within a few months?

wow. Impressed with your participation! ;)LOL! Missed this one.
Regarding the time line, the creation of .mobi involves several steps, from Nokia's concept to the inclusion of more backers to the ICANN approval and the launch.
The launch included a Sunrise TM period, followed by the landrush that many here participated in and then came the regular registration that continues today.
Probably should include the rash of private sales followed by the first TRAFFIC live auction that garnered 200k for Flowers.mobi plus some other strong sales.
One or two more TRAFFIC auctions occurred prior to the first RFP's, the sales were less ground breaking but still very strong for such a new TLD.
I joined NP in 12/06, it was the domain forum least hostile to .mobi as compared to DNF or DS. But the hostility continued to flow. The constant drumbeat of chicken little BS that was given sanctuary there gave cause for a small group of .mobi enthusiasts to build a sanctuary of our own, Mobility.mobi, a place focused on building .mobi, not tearing it down.
And I'm curious like Thinking1, is the book being moved up or are you just putting some pieces into place?

Sorry, never saw the original post until now.
I think there are less people on the forum over a weekend.
No one ignoring you. I think it was missed. I log on and look at new posts. If it is "timed out" it doesn't show up.

No problem thinking1 and Scandi. It is a perfectly relevant question, just that I asnwered it somewhere else. It is in the FAQs that are linked to in the first mobibook thread, in my signature.
Anyway, here they are for easy perusal:

In any case, I'll answer again
You asked me why I am doing the .mobi book now. Well, there are many reasons:
1) promote .mobi
2) help to take away the "stigma" associated with domaining in general (domaining = cybersquatting)
3) show the human side of domaining
4) help people tell their little stories (we all have them)
5) create debate around the extension and its future, in which we all learn, respectfully hearing each other's opinion
6) express my opinion, or rather, my analysis of the situation. I believe some people will find it interesting
7) help increase sales and prices of our domains by showing this world to people, who will in turn become domainers
8) helping to promote .mobi forums (I am a little biased on this one as you may have noticed, as long as people treat me well)
Those are a few good reasons to do it.
Now on to your second question: why now?
Because now is the moment. You see, now is when things are happening, now is the time to gather the information. My thinking is that there will be in the next 8 months some events that will either confirm or dethrone completely .mobi, and I would like to tell that story. What would be the point of making a book when everything happened already? I am not into historical books. I study the future, and .mobi seems to be quite part of that future. So I am betting my time and tallent on a project associated with it.
Third question: how long will it take?
As I said in the FAQs or the other thread about the book, the book may take anything between 8 months to a year to be released, depending on the events and how busy I am (I am not paid for this and the book may well be free)
However, sudden events that confirm the fate of .mobi in one way or another could well accelerate the release of the book
I am trying to make a good job and I won't release it until I am satisfied with it. There is a lot of mediocre writing already on the internet, and a lot of misinformation regarding domain names. I don't want to be part of that.
Suffice to say that I wouldn't like it to take more than 8 months from now, but it is not a promise.
Regarding how the project is going, I can tell you that I just finished the table of contents (not as simple a task as it seems if you want to make a good book on this subject) and have started a draft to document all the information that I am receiving from different sources and scraps that I have seen in many websites, for later polishing of the text. Let's say that 20% is done up to now.
I hope this answers yours and everyone's questions for the moment. THank you for your interest!
PS/ thank you Scandi for your help with that timeline. I know the formal events, but needed to know other little details I must have missed, e.g. the auctions you mentioned. Which one was the one where flowers was sold? I know who bought it, but...where can I find the info about that auction? (it was the first auction, wasn't it?)

Yes, it was the first auction following the launch.

thanks for the clarification Gerry!I assure you that you are in the right place to have all your questions answered. I would love to take time to finish my bio and interest in .mobi.
Family illness has kept me on the road for the past several weeks. Working 12 hour night shifts also keeps me away from the business of .mobi (but not the forums).
Your effort and dedication is most appreciated by many members on this forum. We are here to help and support each other.
I think a great many of us may be caught up in our own projects and passions and not really paying attention to a great deal that goes on outside of our own projects and minds.
So hang in there with us.
Javier,
I have saved quite a large bit of documentation on this.
I used it my platform of proof as to what was happening. I couldn't believe that something this "large" was taking place - and it was happening so quietly.
Here is an example:
dotMobi Reaches Milestones
</SPAN>--31st October 2006
218,000 .mobi registrations by customers in 104 countries around the world.
dotMobi (http://dotmobi.mobi/), a registry for the .mobi domain, announced it has reached two milestones since September public launch.
218,000 .mobi registrations have been done by customers in 104 countries around the world. The first set of nine dotMobi Premium Domain Names were auctioned via Moniker.com (http://moniker.com/)during the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. East domain conference on October 27, 2006. Selling for $200,000 and $100,000, flowers.mobi and fun.mobi respectively, are among the top 20 domain sales for 2006 - unprecedented for a newly introduced TLD, says the company.
"It is obvious that dotMobi strikes a chord with content providers large and small who want to build a direct to consumer mobile channel," said Neil Edwards, CEO of dotMobi. "dotMobi provides the first open solution for Internet-based content on a mobile phone that the average person can afford and access. We are excited to see such a positive and strong market response to dotMobi this early in our business."
I have dates, and news - not just from the mTld.
