Called .mobi — similar to .com and pronounced as dotmobi — the domain name indicates that a site will work on a mobile phone. Given the billions of mobiles ...

Nice find and interesting how they judged .mobis sucess on it, I think it is funny how they said from this article http://www.business-standard.com/iceworld/storypage.php?leftnm=lmnu9&subLeft=5&autono=295027&tab=r:

Net4India — one of the major domain registrars in the country — alone expected 20,000 registrations by end 2006. However, it has managed to get only 1,000 registrations to date, according to Jasjit Sawhney, CEO, Net4india.com, who cannot hide his disappointment with the response.

on a currious note...I wonder how much they were charging for .mobi domains at the time and how reliable they were when the whole landrush took place and shortly after? And did the larger domain registrar companies around the world have more registrations?

Not to put down every negative mobi article because some of them aren't all false but this article is complete bull****.

They have typos in the article, have their facts all wrong, and not to put down mobi, but it was never a "buzzword" in 2006. Only a few people (domainers, and tm holders) knew about mobi.

"Net4India — one of the major domain registrars in the country — alone expected 20,000 registrations by end 2006. However, it has managed to get only 1,000 registrations to date"

Expecting 20,000 registrations for a new extension to a "major domain registrar" is pitifull. That's funny they only had an actual 1,000 sales figure.

they are definitely speaking from sort of a domainers perspective.... like you said, they called it a buzzword and also said
this:

“It was a craze at one point of time when everyone wanted a .mobi domain. However these domains are not actively used, even if they have been registered,” said an official of a global portal who wished not to be named.

everyone? really, already?

I find this paragraph incredibly ignorant and amusing:

"And the Dublin-based Mobile Top Level Domain (mTLD) start-up which started accepting registrations for the ‘.mobi’ addresses last year has so far managed just about 625,000 registrations. Compare this with the over 65 million .com addresses."

Was there some expectation put forth by anyone that mTLD should have 65 million registrations in less than a year? Is this the measure of success for .mobi? I'm curious how many years it took before 625,000 .coms were registered. LOL!
