NEW YORK, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Bank of America Corp (BAC.N: Quote, Profile, Research) wants to add customers who are ready for some football.
The second-largest U.S. bank plans on Thursday to announce a sponsorship making it the National Football League's first official bank ahead of the start of its 2007 season next month. The three-year sponsorship runs through the 2009 season.
"The NFL has the most avid fans of any American sport, with 120 million fans across the U.S.," Susan Faulkner, a Bank of America deposit and debit executive, said in an interview.
Bank of America is already the official bank of Major League Baseball and NASCAR stock-car racing.
The launch comes as the Charlotte, North Carolina-based bank prepares to complete its $21 billion purchase of LaSalle Bank Corp from ABN AMRO Holding NV (AAH.AS: Quote, Profile, Research).
That acquisition will cause Bank of America to bump up against a 10 percent federal cap on deposits, though it may exceed that cap if the growth is not through an acquisition.
Bank of America is using the NFL sponsorship to expand in "affinity" marketing, a specialty developed a quarter-century ago by MBNA Corp, which the bank bought last year.
Affinity credit card holders accrue points through cards imprinted with organizations such as sports teams, charities or universities. Bank of America last year created "affinity banking," offering special rates on some accounts and imprinting logos on checks and statements.
The bank said it already has affinity credit cards with all 32 NFL teams. It plans on Thursday to launch check cards and checks for four: the Carolina Panthers, Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots and Washington Redskins. Faulkner said the bank would seek similar tie-ups with more teams.
