I see a continuing battle between the desire for a large screen and the desire for a smaller, lighter phone. Each company will decide where or how it will position its products along this continuum, attracting users with differing desires and budgets. There will be the power user segment willing to lug around UMPC devices but this is a very small set of users. Apple with it's iPhone is aiming for something like 1-2% of the phone market but even iPhone users report preferring mobile sites since they load faster and require less zooming and scrolling. As desktop PC screens continue to mushroom in size, the UI expectations between them and pocket sized devices will continue to be significantly different.
