The dotmobi saviour?

.Mobi (http://www.dotmobi.mobi/)shot itself in the foot with its plans to auction off names at huge prices. It was engulfed in bad press and accused of having a money grabbing business model. At the time the criticism was fair; it was a bold attempt to make money quickly.

Since then .Mobi has tried to re focus on ‘real’ services rather than promote its cash winning business model. The premise was that .Mobi would make the mobile Internet more accessible. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C (http://www.w3c.org/)) would provide “mobile ready” guidelines and a wealth of new mobile sites would mushroom. This hasn’t happened. A few chosen names have been sold and bought, but .Mobi has fallen way short of expectations.

Enter Nubiq (http://www.nubiq.com/). Nubiq is a white label mobile search company that offers mobile portal and community services under the brand name Zinadoo. (http://www.zinadoo.com/) Nubiq has aligned itself with .Mobi and via the Zinadoo web site, consumers can create .Mobi-ready WAP sites free of charge.
Nubiq is also creating a mobile search engine for all who use the .Mobi domain. This means finding user generated mobile content or .Mobi blogs and WAP sites will be easier. Discovery is key in mobile. Just as user generated mobile content is booming or blogging is soaring: Zinadoo will create a mobile-only WAP community that will drive uptake and data traffic – at last.
Other white label mobile search engines also will find .Mobi sites, but the point of Zinadoo is to focus on developing new communities and encouraging non-believers to create and develop their own WAP sites by providing free, simple to use online tools. Then members can invite friends and colleagues to the site and replicate a kind of mobile-only MySpace on .Mobi.
There are of course pros and cons. By exclusively finding mobile-ready sites a wealth of strong mobile sites will be ignored. Despite this, given that WAP remains a tough sell – free has to be the name of the game. Mobile communities in easy to assemble packages combined with the coming user generated explosion will ensure that sites are creative, naughty and fun.
Which is the best one has been able to say of .Mobi in a very long time.
