Yes indeed - nice tool that many have asked about.

Interesting snapshot stat taken from their demo graphs (circa July 31, 2007):
About 60% of the page views were on the smallest screens (128 px wide).

Gotta keep those small screens in mind. It's much more sexy designing for larger screens but the market is what the market is.

Device resolution - Page views - (%)

128x128 - 12,735 - 34.72%
128x160 - 9,475 - 25.83%

176x220 - 6,017 - 16.40%
240x320 - 4,638 - 12.64%
132x176 - 1,012 - 2.76%
208x208 - 861 - 2.35%
176x208 - 779 - 2.12%

101x80 - 495 - 1.35%
96x95 - 358 - 0.98%
130x130 - 203 - 0.55%
120x160 - 48 - 0.13%
352x416 - 45 - 0.12%
208x320 - 15 - 0.04%

Yes, yes, yes!! I should have looked closer, thanks for pointing this out. My phone has the itty bitty 128x128 screen and images that are bigger get strangely interpolated and fuzzy. Not everyone has an iPhone.

Actually in Romania facts are a litle different.
Take a look at http://mobilestats.ro.

Iphone, Nokia N95, Nokia N70 and other smartphones are the top devices.
Of course, you must still develop custom mobiversions, iphonified, etc.

I notice in your sig you are affiliated with mobilestats.ro.

I also noticed all the reported sites reporting in had m.domain.ro.

Why did you choose m. over .mobi when constructing this model?

Hello.

hotnews.ro, cotidianul.ro, realitatea.net are big news sites in Romania. The .mobi domains were not available.
We've build the mobi versions of these sites on a separated platfom.

An iphone or opera mini user must have the freedom to choose the version he likes (web or mobile) and the separation of url is the simplier way to do it.

We've implemented autoredirection for mobile from the big website to the mobi site on cotidianul.ro. And today it's standard.ro and realitatea.ro time

You say simpler? there is no difference between using m.domain and domain.mobi to separate the mobile version of the site from the desk top...

apart from branding...

Are the dotmobi versions of your names being cyber-squatted?

and if I can ask a hypothetical question... if you had been able to register the dotmobi versions; would you have? and secondly; would you have employed them?

just curious..

Thanks

or simplier: it's enough to use domain. Mobile user enters domain in browser, and it will be redirected to m.domain or domain.mobi or whatever.

yes, those mobi names were cyber-squatted. They are not mine. They belong to big media companies in RO. Probably they would employed them if they were free.

I know this may sound foolish in a way, but it is hard from my point of view to see the primary company and their brand.

I see on one page mobilestats.ro, startech.ro, mobileweb.ro.

So branding was not an issue at the time and it seems nearly anything would have been and was suitable.

Personally, I wish more time would have been spent on choosing that mobile platform.

From the standpoint of the country code .ro domains, these are very good keywords and very good domains.

Branding is branding no matter what you want to call it or how you want to do it.

It appears that you have taken a domain like m.cotidianul.ro and it redirects to cotidianul.ro/mobil. The same with Standard.ro and the others. And m.hotnews.ro is actually hotnews.ro/info-mobile_pda. They are beautiful sites.

But to have an m. to indicate a mobile and then end up on domain.ro/mobil just further confuses the viewer. That is why I wish there could have been one .mobi found, regged, or secured to clarify all this confusion.

Sorry if I sound confused but I am confused with the many indicators for mobile all from the same site. It is the first time I have seen this.

And it just further shows that on a global scale, even in your own language .mobi translates best for mobil(e).

I am also curious how you found this forum.

But welcome again.

It is a 2 way redirection. m.domain is mobile / domain means web.

Enter m.domain.ro from desktop and you'll be redirected to domain.ro/mobil which is a desktopp page where you will receive some info about the mobi site. Something like "Enter m.domain.ro from your mobile.... etc".

The reverse is when mobiles enters domain.ro and they are auto-redirected to m.domain.ro. (this is happening now only on cotidianul, it will be implemented these days on the other sites)

I think it is the same model that cnn is using with cnnmobile.com.
......................

I'd like to discus these issues further, but i think that a new thread would be more suitable.

I wanted to raise a question about the analytics numbers posted here. It seems that in RO people is using advanced models and iphone is leader by far.

PS:
I knew about this forum but i hadn't spent time on it before. Today i've arrived here from wikipedia :).
